“For the short run or the long-distance tour, there is no car in the world better able to get you and your party there and back”

The Stanley Motor Carriage Company was formed in 1902 by twin brothers Francis E. Stanley and Freelan O. Stanley. They produced their first car for personal use in 1897 and between 1898 and 1899 would receive over 200 orders for Steamers. By 1900 there were more than 125 American manufacturers offering steam powered vehicles. By 1905 the Stanley Motor Carriage Company had introduced several new models. The boiler had been moved to the front of the chassis, necessitating a curved front hood and “coffin nose” design Stanleys would later become widely recognized for. At this turning point, the Stanley wheelbase was lengthened to 98 inches. Capable of a speed of 50 miles per hour, The Stanley Model F became known as the fastest stock touring-car in the world in 1906 at Ormond Beach, alongside the Stanley Land Speed Racer.

This 1908 Model F is designated a “Car of Record” in the Stanley Register that tracks all known Stanley cars. This particular Model F was discovered in New Hampshire in the 1940s by pioneering car collector and ‘America’s Favorite Tenor’, James Melton. Melton was especially fond of steam cars, owning multiple and singing their praise in his book, Bright Wheels Rolling. He donated this Stanley to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum where it was displayed for over 40 years. Later, it long resided within the collection of Charlie Johnson, a well known Stanley specialist of Pennsylvania. It still operates on its correct single-fuel system and retains all of its original wood in the body, including the fenders.
