“All-New Eights for ‘48”
The 1948 model year saw the introduction of the second generation of the Packard Custom Eight. This generation began when the Packard Clipper line was rebranded, and the new model was offered as a sedan, coupe, or convertible. Equipped with an enlarged 356 cubic-inch straight-eight motor, the Custom Eight developed 160 horsepower. Convertibles featured power-windows and a power-operated “RoboTop” soft top, which was remarkable in 1948.
The new Custom Eight’s body had an aerodynamic look that gave it a free-flowing appearance, which was shared across all Packard models. The higher trim levels could be identified by their egg-crate grille and horizontal bars below the traditional "ox-yoke" center radiator grille which spanned the entire front. The design was distinctive overall, earning Packard various design awards including "Fashion Car of the Year" from the New York Fashion Academy.
Manufacturing of the Custom Eight ceased in 1950 when the model transitioned to become the Packard 400.
