“For the man who can afford the finest”

On October 5th, 1955, the Continental Mark II made its debut with a price tag of $10,000, which was 50 percent higher than the most expensive Cadillac available that year. The sleek design featured a lengthy hood, a compact rear deck, and a carefully arched trunk to accommodate the distinct “Continental” spare tire. The Continental Mark II was considered the pinnacle of luxury automobiles in the 1950s among the most influential and prominent figures of the time. Renowned personalities such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dwight Eisenhower, Nelson Rockefeller, and even the Shah of Iran were known to be proud owners of this prestigious vehicle.

The Mark II was acclaimed for its exceptional build quality, with meticulous craftsmanship typically reserved for ultra luxury brands like Rolls-Royce. This was evident in the extensive testing and attention to detail during the manufacturing process. For example, the exterior chrome underwent a rigorous ten-day salt spray test, while transmissions were tested separately before being mated with engines. Finished units then underwent a series of thorough dynamometer tests to ensure quality. Once assembly was complete, each car was subjected to comprehensive road testing before being released for delivery to customers.

Almost entirely hand-assembled in Allen Park Michigan, this 1956 Continental Mark II coupe embodies the “flagship” determination of Ford’s leadership before reintegrating the Continental namesake back under the Lincoln brand.
