In 1953, Oldsmobile showcased their newest design ideas alongside other GM divisions at their Motorama show, first using the “Starfire” name on a concept convertible at the direction of the famed Harley Earl. By 1956, General Motors began referring to the new Oldsmobiles as being “Starfire-styled” in advertising. However, it was not until 1957 that the Starfire nameplate made its way to the 98-Series Sedan and Coupe models.

At the top of the Oldsmobile product line for 1957, the Starfire 98 Holiday Hardtop incorporated many luxury features such as power-adjustable seats, power-operated windows, Pedal-Ease power brakes, and interior courtesy lights. Innovations such as Oldsmobile’s Autronic-Eye automatic high-beams, and a Bi-Phonic speaker system became available as well. Power was supplied by the new “Rocket” T-400 V8 engine, developing 277 horsepower in its base configuration. Oldsmobile’s new Wide-Stance Chassis, featuring heavier frame construction, advanced front and rear suspension, as well as larger tires, underpinned these large and luxurious automobiles.

This 1957 Starfire 98 Holiday Hardtop Coupe incorporates amenities such as the Wonder Bar radio and the multitude of power-operated features that Oldsmobile owners came to enjoy. Equipped with the J2 option (Code W) this example exhibits triple Rochester two-barrel carburetors, available before Pontiac’s Tri-Power by only a few weeks. Expertly restored in its original color scheme of Jade Mist, Platinum Mist, and Alcan White, this Starfire 98 is an exemplary representation of glitzy 1950s American motoring.
