The station wagon played a vital role for families throughout the 1950s, 60s, and even into the 70s. This period marked a turning point in the automotive industry, as vehicles began to better meet the diverse needs of their owners. With ample space for mom to take the kids to school and dad to load up the rear with tools and supplies, station wagons emerged as the ultimate multipurpose vehicle. Their popularity soared, offering the perfect blend of passenger comfort and cargo capacity, making them perfect for suburban family life.
Following the debut of the Chevrolet Nomad station wagon in 1955, the Pontiac Motor Division of General Motors introduced its newest addition to its model line, the Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari station wagon. GM's styling chief Harley Earl suggested that Pontiac develop its own version of the wildly popular Chevrolet. This sleek and spacious "Star Flight" styled wagon was available in both two-door and four-door configurations.
The 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari two-door station wagon exemplifies mid-century American automotive design and luxury. With just 1,292 examples produced for the model year, the two-door wagon is seldom seen today. This particular example boasts a stunning Cordova Red exterior finish with a contrasting Kenya Ivory roof, paired with a maroon and ivory leather interior. Renowned for its advanced features, this wagon includes air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, and a six-way power-adjustable front seat. The interior is elegantly detailed with star-design seatback accents. In addition, it features a Wonder Bar radio, and the exterior features spinner-style wheel covers and whitewall tires, complemented by dual exhaust.
Under the hood, this Star Chief Custom Safari is powered by Pontiac’s 347 cubic inch V8 engine, with a trio of Rochester two-barrel carburetors mated to a Strato-Flight four-speed transmission, delivering a powerful and smooth ride. This blend of performance and luxury made the Pontiac a standout in its era, capturing the spirit of 1950s American innovation and optimism.
