1962 Ford Thunderbird Coupe

1962 Ford Thunderbird Coupe

Transmission - 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic
Horsepower - 300 at 4600 rpm
Production - 68,127 hardtop coupes for 1962

First debuted in 1961, the third-generation Ford Thunderbird introduced a dramatically restyled body that marked a decisive leap forward in design from prior models. The graceful new shape, featuring sculpted bumpers and continuous side trim lines with integrated door handles, was soon referred to as the “bullet bird.” This pioneering new model, equipped with a “Swing Away” steering wheel for easy entry and exit, a powerful new 390 cubic-inch V8 engine, and Cruise-O-Matic transmission, was used as the 50th Anniversary Pace Car for the 1961 Indianapolis 500, and was also featured in the inauguration parade for President John F. Kennedy. The 1962 model year saw subtle trim changes and the addition of a Sports Roadster, while the Thunderbird’s overall design was in place from 1961 until 1963.

Finished in its original color, Raven Black, this 1962 Thunderbird Coupe was assembled in Wixom, Michigan and represents the “bullet bird” generation with impeccable style. The grille, incorporating horizontal bars with squares, is unique to the 1962 model year, and this example features late-style Thunderbird wheel covers.
