Redesigned for the 1968 model year, the new Dodge Charger was differentiated from the Dodge Coronet with “Coke bottle” styling by Richard Sias, characterized by graceful curves around the fenders and quarter panels. With front and rear end sheet metal designed by Harvey J. Winn, the new Charger took on a sporting appearance “wearing the shape of tomorrow.” A flying buttress styled roofline was implemented on the 1968 Charger which was reminiscent of the 1966-1967 Pontiac GTO. The familiar full-width hidden headlight grille remained, but now with vacuum-operated covers concealing the lights versus electrically-rotating lamp assemblies.
R/T stood for Road/Track on performance models, highlighting the car’s athleticism. The restyled Charger became famously popularized by appearances in television and film, notably the movie “Bullitt,” wherein a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T is iconically pursued by Steve McQueen’s Ford Mustang GT on the unyielding streets of San Francisco.
Presented in its original color combination of metallic burgundy over black, this fully-restored 1968 Dodge Charger R/T Hemi features a 3.54 ratio Sure Grip rear end, a Hurst shifter, factory-fitted tachometer, bucket seats, and center console. Immortalized on screen, and backed by hearty performance, the powerful Dodge Charger R/T epitomizes muscle car excellence of the late-1960s.
