“Always a Step Ahead”
Oldsmobile's second-generation Vista Cruiser, introduced in 1968, featured a new exterior design. Cutlass sheet metal was utilized, but the Vista Cruiser had a five inch longer wheelbase than any other four door Oldsmobile intermediate car. Oldsmobile Vista Cruisers are notable for their fixed-glass, roof-mounted skylights over the second row with sun visors for the second-row passengers. They also incorporated a raised roof behind the skylight and lateral glass panels over the rear cargo area.
Like its predecessor, the updated Vista Cruiser retained Oldsmobile designer Pete Wolenza's signature sloped "Vista Roof,” but with a single piece of tinted glass instead of the previous two-piece design. Annual styling updates to this model brought new grilles and front-end designs, while the 1970 models underwent more comprehensive restyling, sometimes referred to as the "Generation 2A" cars. Safety features such as a collapsible steering column, optional shoulder belts, and front disc-brakes demonstrated Oldsmobile's increasing focus on occupant protection during the late 1960s. The Vista Cruiser also offered a dual-action tailgate that could open flat or to the side.
Although it was a strong seller in the wagon segment, 1972 marked Vista Cruiser’s ninth and final year. Finished in Nordic Blue with woodgrain accents, this 1972 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser epitomizes the iconic station wagons that reflected the growing popularity of family road trips along the expanding U.S. interstate system.
