“A new vehicle ready to go - Now!”
In the late 1970s the United States Army wanted to replace its varied fleet of light duty and utility vehicles with a common solution, a general purpose multi-role vehicle that could be configured a number of different ways. Teledyne, an American industrial conglomerate, took their chance at securing the government's bid. The Army released a letter of interest in July of 1980 with specifications released in February of 1981. These specifications were sent out to 61 manufacturers, inviting them to submit designs and bid the contract. Of the 61 selected, only five submitted designs and three were selected for testing, Teledyne being one of them. Teledyne would go on to produce 11 prototypes in varying configurations, delivered to the United States Army in 1982, and rigorously tested. Ultimately the Teledyne ‘HMMWV’ was not chosen for the contract, losing out to AM General in 1983 after they were awarded the initial contract of over 55,000 units in the first five years.
